There are three basic ways to detect lightning: Acoustic (when you hear thunder after lightning strikes), Optical (not just what your eyes can see), and Electric Fields. In the third method, lightning strikes give off pulses which we can measure and use to differentiate between in-cloud and cloud-to-ground strikes.
